Save Our Local Pharmacies

Pharmacies must stay at heart of our community - Lib Dem Cllr. Jude Deakin

This Government's real terms cash cuts to pharmacies across the UK could be about to take their toll. Local pharmacies used by hundreds of local people are facing closure, cutting off lifeline services for many elderly and vulnerable residents.

Local Councillor Jude Deakin says, "For many people the trip to get vital medicines from the pharmacy is long enough already."

"Cutting money to local pharmacies is nothing more than robbing Peter to pay Paul. It will only increase the strain on hospitals and GP's practices at a time when the NHS is already in enough trouble."

Mahesh Sodha has been dispensing in community for 38 years. Colecross Dispensing Chemist is one of only a handful of independent pharmacies left in Chelmsford. He offers flu jabs, one to one consultations and a free prescription delivery service for those in the community unable to get to the chemist.

Mahesh receives paid 90p per dispensing fee. Mahesh works 70 hours a week and has to do all ordering, stock control, staff wages, VAT returns, which large groups like Boots can pass on to their admin staff.

The £170million reduction in NHS funding for community pharmacies will put pharmacies across Chelmsford out of business too.

We the undersigned oppose Conservative cuts to local pharmacies. They are vital to keep older frail people independent. Older people need to be at the heart of our community, rather than in hospital.
