Save Essex children's centres

children playingEssex County Council proposes closing 25 of the 37 children's centres and renaming the remaining 12 as "family hubs". In Chelmsford, the ones to close include centres near the primary schools of Kings Road, Perryfields and Westlands.

They offer services including maternity support, health clinics, ante-natal classes, social care therapeutic work with families and emotional and well-being mental health services.

The council says the new "family hubs" will co-ordinate support and services for families from pregnancy up to the age of 19.

Some existing children's centres would run reduced hours as delivery sites, while outreach sites providing information and guidance will be set up at libraries.

Steve Sipple (from Action for Children, who runs therapy programmes in Essex) said he thought the plans were "a bad idea" [full story].
