Lib Dems Demand Protection For Renters
Back the Bill to protect renters rights says Cllr. Stephen Robinson
The Liberal Democrats are proposing a bill to reduce the costs of moving for renters. The Renters Rights Bill will ban letting agents from charging fees to tenants. The Bill will also make renting safer through mandatory electrical checks and give tenants greater protections against rogue landlords.
The number of private renters in Britain is growing and now sits at 18% of the population.
This rising demand for rented homes is pushing up costs and allowing some landlords to take advantage of tenants who have relatively little power to object to high prices or poor conditions.
Cllr Stephen Robinson said, "The law needs to change to make renting cheaper, safer and more secure for tenants. We should ban letting fees, clarify that the landlord pays the fee and make it a fairer marketplace for those who rent. It is a sad state of affairs when you have more consumer rights when you buy a fridge, than they do when they rent the home. That cannot be right."
Stephen added, "It is time for the Government to address this imbalance of power and build up the consumer rights of renters.
The Lib Dems 4 steps to protect private renters;
1) Ban letting fees for renters.
2) Give renters access to an open register of rogue landlords.
3) Enforce compulsory electrical safety checks in rented homes.
4) Prevent rogue landlords from obtaining an House of Multiple Occupation licence.
