Litter picking crewOn Friday 15 April, the Westlands area of Chelmsford will be treated to a special day of attention and care.

This 'Day of Action' is part of Chelmsford City Council's Neighbourhood Improvement & Community Engagement (NICE) programme, which is all about encouraging community pride and making the places where you live nicer.

The event, which sees CHP, Chelmsford Centre Supporting Voluntary Action and Chelmsford Star Co-op come together with the City Council as a task force to improve the local area, aims to make a visible difference.

County Councillor Jude Deakin welcomed the event saying "This is a great community and partnership initiative. I hope the residents of Westlands and surrounding areas will join in on Friday"

On the day:

  • City Council officers will be litter-picking, removing graffiti, enforcing and educating about dog fouling, addressing anti-social behaviour, sweeping roads and replacing street nameplates
  • Recycling officers will distribute extra recycling bags and boxes to residents and providing advice about food waste collections
  • Chelmsford City Council's Dog Wardens will be providing free microchipping of dogs between 9:30am and 3.30pm to help residents to comply with new microchipping legislation which came into force on 6 April 2016. Officers will also be on hand to give advice on dog fouling and littering and will hand out free dog bags and mini bins.
  • Staff from the DVLA will be in the area, using Number Plate Recognition to spot untaxed cars
  • Year 5 pupils from Westlands Primary School will be helping NICE officers to tidy up West Park
