Chelmsford Council is giving away free bags of compost in Hylands Park tomorrow, Saturday 12 May, 10am - 3pm for The giveaway will take place in Hylands Park, near the Writtle Road entrance.

The giveaway uses compost made from recycled garden waste collected at the kerbside and at recycling centres, and will be distributed on a first come, first served basis with one large bag given to each household.

Members of the Recycle for Chelmsford Team will also be on hand to offer advice on making compost at home, and there's the chance to win one of 50 home compost bins by entering a competition on the day.

Compost Awareness Week runs from 6 - 12 May to promote home composting as a way to keep garden and household waste from going to landfill.

Almost a third of household waste can be home composted, including uncooked kitchen scraps such as vegetable peelings and teabags, as well as small pieces of paper and cardboard, and all other food waste can be recycled using the Council's food waste collection service.

Spring is the ideal time to start home composting and in addition to the compost giveaway, Chelmsford residents can take advantage of some fantastic offers on compost bins, with prices starting from just £16 plus delivery. For more details visit
