It was announced this morning that the Queen is to confer City status on Chelmsford to mark Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee. Deputy Prime Minister (& Lib Dem Leader) Nick Clegg made the announcement today, before he took Prime Minister's Questions at noon.

Chelmsford was one of 23 towns in the running for the honour. When the Lib Dems were running Chelmsford Council, a bid was made in 2001 and previous Group Leader, Mike Mackrory, pushed the council to back this current bid.

Leader of the Lib Dem Opposition, Cllr. Chris Rycroft, commented, "Chelmsford is the County Town of Essex; has a fine Cathedral; a successful and expanding University and College; excellent schools; high tech industries; growing shopping centres, and many thriving voluntary and community groups. As a fast growing, vibrant town, City status is richly deserved. A big thank you to everyone who supported the bid."

The 'town' has finally caught up with what the football club knew for some time! Together with the people of Chelmsford the Lib Dem team will push to put this city firmly on the map.
