Stephen & Angela Robinson

Campaigner

Stephen is a long-standing and successful Liberal Democrat campaigner. He served as a District and County Councillor for 11 years and stood here in West Chelmsford at the 2001 and 2005 General Elections. In 2005, he took the Liberal Democrats up to second place in the General Election - one of the best Lib Dem results in Essex and the East region.

County Councillor 1993-2001; District Councillor 1990-1998 (Joint Council Leader 1994-96; Leisure Services Chair 1994-98)

Public and community service runs through Stephen's background and his family's.

Work

Stephen graduated with a Law with Politics degree. Since then, he has worked for a political research group Common Voice, Essex Liberal Democrats, CSV National Volunteer Network and the Royal Institute of British Architects.

Voluntary activity

Stephen followed his father and grandfather into the Scout Movement. He was a member of the voluntary service group Rotaract, serving as President of the Loughton Club 1995-96. Stephen and his wife are both members of the National Childbirth Trust.

Council activity

Stephen was elected as an Epping Forest District Councillor in 1990 and an Essex County Councillor in 1993 and re-elected in both cases four years later. He led the Epping Forest Lib Dem Group 1993-96 and chaired the Leisure Services committee 1994-98. On Essex County Council he was deputy group leader, Libraries spokesman and committee chair for one year.

Family

Stephen is married to Angela Robinson, who is also active in the Liberal Democrats, having stood in council elections on a number of occasions. Their son recently left Tanglewood nursery school in north Chelmsford for his local infants' school.

Stephen's mother and father were members of Round Table/Rotary and Ladies Circle. So Stephen's summer Saturdays as a child were often spent helping out with community service activities. Stephen's father was a local general practice solicitor and Stephen's sister is a police officer.

Interests

Since he was old enough to hold a map, Stephen has been interested in geography and the world around us. Inevitably, political history is fairly high on the list of required reading but also the local history and geography of mid Essex. As a cyclist locally, Stephen often experiences local geography first hand!

Stephen's early interest in amateur dramatics perhaps led to a later interest in politics.
