Honour the Covenant8.31.15pm GMT Sun 11th Nov 2007
The Liberal Democrats have supported today's call by the Royal British Legion to improve the treatment of our former and current armed services personnel. Chelmsford Parliamentary Candidate Stephen Robinson said, "The country asks a great deal of our service personnel and I firmly believe that not enough is being done to ensure their well-being and health in return. That is why we backed the Legion's call to 'Honour the Covenant' at our September conference. "I am delighted to have had a positive response from Lib Dem Shadow Defence Secretary Nick Harvey MP when I wrote to him." Mr Harvey said, "We must make sure that any personnel injured in active service receive adequate medical care and I recognise the importance of separate military wards in hospitals for the upkeep of the morale of troops who might otherwise feel unappreciated for their contribution in fulfilling Government aims. Given the large number of ex-service people now homeless, ill, unemployed and suffering from serious mental health problems, I feel very strongly that troops returning home with injuries should be given thorough medical care and support to ease them back into the very different lifestyle they find on their return."
