70 Post Offices are to be sold off to W H Smith, including the one in Chelmsford town centre under proposals publicised yesterday. These proposals are opposed by the Liberal Democrats.

Last year the Lib Dems published proposals to save the Post Office network and keep these Main Post Offices in public hands. To date, the Lib Dems remain the only party to have published detailed proposals that will save the Post Offices.

Labour and the Conservatives have both washed their hands of the Post Office network. Under the Conservatives 4,000 local post offices closed and nearly 3,000 have closed under Labour - eight of those in the West Chelmsford constituency.
