In March 2006, we launched the on-line questionnaire below consulting Chelmsford people on the plans to have a "one way racetrack" through the town centre. We are delighted that nearly all the responses to this survey and those replies received by the council opposed the scheme.
In early May the Conservatives at county hall announced they were dropping these proposals. Cllr Keith Francis (Chelmsford Central and Lib Dem transport spokesman) said: "I am delighted that the ruling Conservatives have finally accepted the folly of this thoroughly bad proposal. I have repeatedly urged them to drop this ill thought out scheme. It was contrary to the need to make the town less traffic dominated and in direct conflict with the borough council's aspirations and planning strategy. It is clear that the people of Chelmsford have no appetite for such a scheme which, amongst other things, was never likely to meet the objectives that were set for it. This is a rare victory for plain common sense and exposes how out of touch this Tory administration is."
"Instead the council should concentrate on providing a complete network of park and ride services for Chelmsford, which would go a long way towards reducing the need for traffic to enter the town centre in the first place",
Cllr Francis added.
