Chelmsford Young People's Survey: priorities for local action

This survey arises from a number of discussions that Stephen Robinson has had with young people locally. Views are welcome from any young people in Chelmsford. The aim is to address the frequent comment that "there is not enough for young people to do in Chelmsford".

10 ideas were particularly popular amongst young people at Moulsham High school. These can be grouped under three headings. So which TYPE of project should we pursue?
Issues affecting Chelmsford's environment
New facilities for young people
Particular help for young people
If "local environmental issues", which should we pursue?
More trees in Chelmsford
Protect open spaces from development
Fewer cars
More cycleways
Clean up the town centre
Other:
If "new facilities projects", which should we pursue?
A club/bar (possible music venue) for under-18 s
Meazone/laserquest
Theme park/water park
A beach in central park
Other:
If "projects to help young people", which ones?
Cheaper buses
More jobs for young people

Issues mentioned but not included in the poll

Many other ideas were suggested for local action. However, when people voted, they were not as popular as those listed above. Here are the other ideas, with some explanatory comments at the end.

Other possibilities and issues

Lights in Central Park by the skate ramp

Wardens in the parks / more police so we feel safer

More recycling

Clean up the river

More sports facilities

Cleaner toilets / more toilets in town

Graffiti wall

More bins in the High Street / "fun" litter bins e.g. frogs

Chewing gum bins

CCTV in the High Street that "talks" to you

CCTV in parks

Snooker club

Tour buses

One night at the Odeon specifically for 14-16s

More buses Sundays and evenings

Mini moto track

Encourage girls to cycle

Paint ball venue

Internet cafe

More youth shelters

More music concerts like V festival

More Christmas lights

Improve the Melbourne area

The police are too heavy handed/stop people for no reason

Ideas requiring National action

Tax on pollution (that's a Lib Dem policy)

Renewable energy generation (that's also a Lib Dem policy!)

Not included

- A second cinema - this is outside council control and it would be too expensive. But we could lobby the Odeon for different films. Also note that Cramphorn Theatre (by the bus station) does show the less popular films. Lobby them too!

- A Primark - this is a commercial decision, not something the council can really influence

- Wider range of lessons and subjects to choose at school / no uniform / shorter school hours. Outside council control: the school council and parents could discuss these with teachers.

- Tram in the town centre. They are very expensive and Chelmsford not large enough to make it pay. But we can consider things like better buses.
