Liberal Democrats in Government have put in place plans that will protect and develop the Post Office network. More than 6,000 Post Offices will be revamped by the Government over the next three years (BBC report 9 March 2012).
Lib Dems in Chelmsford and nationally have been campaigning to save the local Post Office network for many years. (See Cllr. Tom Smith-Hughes and Cllr. Stephen Robinson in the photo.)
Postal affairs minister, Lib Dem Norman Lamb MP, drew up this policy in Opposition and is now delivering in Government. He said: "This Government has made a commitment that there will be no closure programme and invested £1.34bn to secure the long term future of the Post Office."
The network as a whole will be more secure, following an announcement by Business Secretary Vince Cable (see here).
Thousands closed under both Conservative and Labour governments. Here in Chelmsford that includes Broomfield; Duke Street; Kings Road; Queens Road; Trent Road; and one in Great Baddow.
On 17 May 2007 Labour announced the closure of a further 2,500 Post Offices around the country. In April 2007, the Post Office announced plans to transfer Chelmsford's main Post Office to W H Smith
