Essex County Council's "Safeguarding Children" service is no longer one of the six worst councils in the country. However it is still in the bottom third. In the latest Government inspection it has struggled up the ratings to 'satisfactory', after several years of being being in special measures.
Liberal Democrats on the County Council have kept up the pressure on the Conservatives to sort out this appalling situation. Many £millions have been spent trying to turn round this failing service, which deals with vulnerable children who find themselves in difficult circumstances through no fault of their own.
Leader of the Opposition Cllr Tom Smith-Hughes said, "This service should at least be rated 'good' and ideally 'excellent' - like most other County Councils. We will keep on pressing the Conservatives for improvements."
