Campaigning for Stock, the Hanningfields, Runwell and Sandon

The by-election for the Essex County Council seat of Stock (*) is being fought for the Liberal Democrats by the chairman of their local constituency party, Marian Elsden. The by-election (on 8th September) was caused by the imprisonment of the former councillor, Lord Hanningfield.

Marian Elsden is a successful businesswoman and an experienced campaigner with a record of involvement with the community. Marian moved back to Essex eight years ago after a career that took her from Somerset to Hong Kong and London; she started her career in Chelmsford at Marconi.
Marian Elsden said, "This by-election has been caused by a leading Conservative's conviction for expenses fraud. However, the election will be fought on the Conservatives' poor record of running Essex County Council. This includes spending:
- £173 million on consultants and agency staff [more]
- £472,000 on gagging former staff [more]
- £6,900 on a bonus for the Chief Executive [more]
while cutting £300 million from local services.

"The Conservatives hold 59 seats on the Council with the Lib Dems being the main opposition party. Local people don't need yet another Conservative who will toe the party line; they need someone who will really stand up for the area."
(*) The Essex County Council seat of Stock covers Stock, Margaretting, the Hanningfields, Runwell, Rettendon, Bicknacre, Woodham Ferrers village, Sandon and Howe Green.
