Over half of Lib Dem manifesto is now Government policy

December 31, 2010 4:57 PM

The Liberal Democrats have published research showing that very many policies on which they fought May's election are now Government policy. Commented Stephen Robinson (who was the Chelmsford candidate), "The Lib Dems won less than 1 in 10 of the seats in the House of Commons. However over half of our manifesto is now Government policy. That is a huge achievement for our party.

"So if people ask what have the Lib Dems got from being in Government, they only have to look at the list. All four of our top priorities (on the front of our manifesto and every leaflet we sent round Chelmsford) are being delivered:

  • We promised fairer taxes. We are taking 900,000 people out of tax on 5th April; others on low and middle incomes will get an income tax cut of £200.
  • We promsed a fair start to ensure no child gets left behind. Our pupil premium will give an EXTRA £430 every year to every pupil from the poorest backgrounds (in addition to the boost in their tax credits).
  • We promised cleaner politics. Amongst other things, we are giving the people a referendum on 5th May so they can end the "jobs for life" that many MPs have.
  • We promised greener jobs. We are creating a Green Investment Bank to invest over £1 billion in infrastructure like new rail links; and are supporting green energy generation.

The Liberal Democrats have been in government for only eight months, but we have already implemented many of our manifesto policies.

Below is a list of these policies and what we are doing to make them happen. The list does not even include those of our policies that are in the coalition agreement but have not yet been implemented - so this list is just the first part of a long line of Liberal Democrat policies to come.

The list is organised according to each section of our 2010 manifesto, for ease of comparison. However in some areas, such as environmental policy, it made more sense to group it together in one section, so it will not always be completely true to the original structure.

This document is a striking illustration of the influence the Liberal Democrats are having in government.
