Nick Clegg on his campaign visit to see Stephen Robinson in Chelmsford
Stephen Robinson has thanked the over 20,000 people who voted Liberal Democrat in Chelmsford and the team of Liberal Democrat helpers who delivered such a brilliant campaign. The result in Chelmsford saw a collapse in the Labour vote (from 27% to 11%) and almost no shift of support from Lib Dem to the Conservative. The result in detail is here: http://cmld.org.uk/results/1711.html Commented Stephen Robinson:
"I am immensely proud of the Chelmsford Lib Dem team who have worked so hard - a great bunch of volunteers who do their bit. I want to thank the 20,000 people who entrusted me with their hopes for a fairer future.
"I met so many people who were hoping for something better - for an end to blue-red, red-blue politics - and they will be very disappointed if little changes as a result. I hope that the new parliament will back reform of the political process.
"For example, people often vote for one thing but our creaky electoral system delivers something else. It cannot be right that a party gains more votes than last time but fewer MPs."
