Stephen Robinson talking to the local fundraiser from Help for Heroes
Following action by a local campaigner, former armed service personnel in mid Essex will now be given more information about their rights to access local health services. Local Liberal Democrat Stephen Robinson has secured a commitment from NHS Mid Essex to distribute to all GP practices a British Legion poster on veterans' health services.
Stephen Robinson commented, "We ask these brave men and women to put their lives at risk in the service of our nation. The least we can do is look after them properly when they leave the services."
In 2008 the Government said that veterans should get priority access to health care that they need. Since very few GPs or veterans knew about this, the Royal British Legion produced in 2009 a poster and leaflet for GP surgeries to display.
A former soldier with 2 Royal Anglian who lives in Chelmsford recently contacted local Liberal Democrat campaigner Stephen Robinson to find out why this commitment was not being kept. Mr Robinson contacted NHS Mid Essex and they agreed to send the information to every GP in Mid Essex and ask them to display the posters.
This is all part of Mr Robinson's ongoing campaign to improve services for veterans. He was an early backer for the British Legion's "Honour the Covenant" campaign and at last September's party conference he proposed a policy amendment to improve health and welfare services for veterans.
