Holocaust Memorial Day - 27 January 2010

January 22, 2010 12:42 PM

small candleLocal residents are invited to a Holocaust Memorial Day commemoration next Wednesday (27th January 2010) 6.30pm to 9.30pm at Hylands House, near Chelmsford. The event is hosted by Chelmsford Borough Council and is on the international day of remembrance for the victims of the Holocaust and other genocides. Commented local Lib Dem Stephen Robinson, "I think it is important that everyone remembers what can happen if you start down the slippery path of singling out different groups in society just because of their background. Wherever we are born, whatever our backgrounds, we are all people entitled to non-discrimination."

This year marks the 65th anniversary of the date of the liberation of Nazi death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. On this day, the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust will be challenging everyone across the UK to become part of a 'Legacy of Hope'. This event will include a guest speaker, a screening of 'The Children Who Cheated The Nazis', exhibitions and stands.

The event's guest speaker is Otto Deutsch - a Kindertransport survivor and the only survivor of his immediate family. He will describe in detail his experiences as a Jewish child in Vienna during the period immediately preceding the outbreak of war (including the "Anschluss") and the alarming pace of the Nazification of the society from which, alone, as a child, he was eventually sent away.

The event is being delivered in partnership with Chelmsford Jewish Association. A buffet and refreshments will be provided. To book a place and to advise the Council of any access requirements, please email equalityanddiversity@chelmsford.gov.uk or call 01245 606866.
