Senior Conservative MPs have called for a huge hike in MPs' salaries. Douglas Hogg (the MP who charged the taxpayers for "moat cleaning") has suggested a £100,000 salary and Sir Patrick Cormack suggested £130,000. Chelmsford Lib Dem parliamentary candidate Stephen Robinson has condemned the proposals.
"These proposals are greedy and offensive. This just goes to show how completely out of touch the Conservatives really are, and how totally insensitive they are to public opinion. Don't they know how angry people are?"
Stephen added, "MPs should not be entering the House of Commons in order to become wealthy at the public's expense."
