Stephen Robinson and Andrew Duff campaigning in south Chelmsford
The Liberal Democrats in Chelmsford have seen their vote in the European Parliament election rise by 1735 since the last such election in 2004, showing a swing from Conservative AND Labour AND UKIP to the Lib Dems. These votes helped Andrew Duff to be re-elected as Lib Dem MEP for the area. Coming on top of excellent local election results, this all points to a close race to be the MP for Chelmsford - between Lib Dem Stephen Robinson and the Conservatives.
The UKIP share of the vote was down slightly compared to 2004 but the Labour vote slumped, with the party falling to fifth place across the Borough.
Commented Chelmsford Lib Dem Parliamentary Candidate Stephen Robinson: "We believe that Britain's best interests are served by working closely with our European neighbours. We cannot solve international crime, climate change or the financial crisis without doing so. That was our message to local people and our vote share rose.
"The European elections are always our worst share of the vote, so we are delighted with an increased share. We are set to win at the General Election in Chelmsford."
