Gloria Nichols and Stephen Robinson examine all the wasteful packaging around an Easter egg.
Liberal Democrat Councillor Gloria Nichols has been highlighting the wasteful packaging that comes with the Easter Eggs we buy from the high street. Councillor Nichols decided to speak out about this after she found she was unable to buy any Easter Eggs that did not come with excess packaging.
Parliamentary Candidate for Chelmsford Stephen Robinson, commented 'We have seen the amount of packaging used for high street goods increase rapidly in the last few years, even though it is accepted that we cannot keep producing the amount of waste we currently do. With Easter Eggs, what is even more concerning is that it is customers who are picking up the price of this packaging; the actual chocolate in these packs can be bought separately for two to three pounds, yet when packaged altogether, people are being charged five pounds or more.'
Essex has a particularly acute waste problem, with the amount of rubbish being sent to landfill well above the national average. Whilst people must be encouraged to throw out less waste, it does not help that supermarkets in particular are so keen to hand out excess packaging with their products. It was recently revealed that families inadvertently spend 17% of their food budgets on packaging, which has led Lib Dems nationally to set up a campaign on the issue: http://www.libdems.org.uk/campaigns/excess-packaging.16634.html
