Lib Dems challenge Conservative cuts to road and pavement budget

It will be years before all local potholes and pavements are repaired, thanks to highway budget cuts by the ruling Conservatives. Liberal Democrats across Chelmsford are always receiving complaints about the roads and pavements. The County Council cut funding from £730,000 two years ago to £235,000 now for the whole of Chelmsford. The Lib Dem budget amendment to put this right was lost.
The resurfacing of Longmead & Meadgate Avenues in Great Baddow is just one location scheduled for the 2007/8 financial year. "Will this survive Conservative cuts?" asks Baddow Lib Dem Councillor Maureen Miller. Highways officers also continue their studies to find a safe location for the pedestrian crossing of Maldon Road, near Longmead Avenue. Said Cllr Maureen Miller, "I will continue to fight for this."
Another area in need of repairs is St. John's Road in Old Moulsham. Local Lib Dem campaigner Peter Brooks is lobbying for repairs there.
