Lib Dems say No to town centre "one way racetrack"

Tories cannot keep trying to just make traffic jams move a bit faster

Essex County Council wants to push through a new road layout for Chelmsford town centre and is consulting the public this week. Chelmsford Liberal Democrats have branded this a "one way racetrack" and are running a campaign against the proposals. These changes could cost over £700,000, which could be spent on much higher priorities, such as road and footway maintenance.

The Liberal Democrats are lobbying local people during the public consultation taking place at County Hall this week (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 22-24 March, 9.00am to 7.00pm and Saturday 25th March 10.00am to 4.00pm).

Lib Dem Highways spokesman Cllr. Keith Francis said, "This scheme will have very bad implications for the town's character, environment, local residents and business community. Liberal Democrats are OPPOSED to this scheme because it

• Forces extra traffic in and through the heart of the town

• Undermines further pedestrian-friendly plans

• Increases traffic speeds and lessens road safety

• Increases CO2 and other pollution in the town

• Increases journey times and distance for most users

• Deters pedestrians and cyclists from using the town

• Destroys the character of the town's historic core

Cllr Ian Gale (Lib Dem Technical Services spokesman) added, "The Conservative-run County Council has been FORCED to have this consultation (they wanted to just impose the scheme). We urge local people to make their views known during the consultation.

"The County Council should look at proposals that will reduce the number of cars in the town centre at peak times, not try in vain to keep the traffic jams moving a bit faster."
