1500 signatures like this harvested by Cllr. Tom Smith-Hughes have persuaded Tesco Stores to think again
Lib Dem Cllr. Tom Smith-Hughes says, "A massive local campaign - including a Lib Dem petition of 1500 signatures - has forced Tesco to postpone the closure of Broomfield Parade Post Office until the end of September."
He went on "Your Liberal Democrat councillors have been working tirelessly with the key parties to get Tesco to put off the closure to enable new interested postmasters to finalise their negotiations with Post Office Limited. While I welcome the announcement I want to add a note of caution:
"We are still insisting that Tesco should NOT close the existing post office in One Stop until a new postmaster is in place. Continuity is vital to ensure the new postmaster is able to continue a viable business."
The Liberal Democrats have also been pressing the Post Office to act with urgency. Said local Lib Dem Councillor Alan Arnot: "When nearby post offices were closed under the Labour Government's programme, Broomfield Parade was offered as the alternative for residents in Broomfield and most of Patching Hall. Closure would leave thousands of residents facing difficult journeys to the town centre or other distant post offices."
