Stephen Robinson with Charles Kennedy "Lib Dems the effective Opposition to Labour"
The Liberal Democrats have published their programme for the next parliamentary session, setting out their clear alternatives to the other two main parties. Their candidate for West Chelmsford, Stephen Robinson, this week set out the different policies they would have written into the Queen's Speech at Tuesday's State Opening of Parliament.
Said Mr Robinson, "We believe it is the duty of an opposition party to provide an alternative vision to the Government's. These are not the only things we want to do," he said, "but, with a general election expected in May, this will be a short session and so our top priorities are:
Help Chelmsford's young people by scrapping top-up fees and tuition fees
Help taxpayers in Chelmsford by scrapping the unfair council tax
Help older people in Chelmsford by increasing the basic state pension
Help older and disabled people in Chelmsford with free personal care
Put the environment at the heart of public policy making
Tackle crime in Chelmsford with workable solutions not soundbites
Continue to hold the Government to account over their mistakes in Iraq
